Nobody Knows Anything: Will Muschamp has Gator blood
This week's games that made no sense to anyone:
Florida 38, Georgia 20
This was an upset, but how the game was won is the bigger surprise. Florida threw for 27 yards on Saturday while gaining 445 total yards. Georgia turned the ball over just once, and, outside of the fake field goal, the Gators did not have a lot of fluky plays. Florida, a team that is simply not good, ran over Georgia.
The SEC East is as weak as the SEC West is strong. The most talented team in the division, UGA, already has two bad losses, and the Bulldogs still have games against Kentucky, Auburn and Georgia Tech left. An 8-4 record is a real possibility, which would be an extremely disappointing result for the Georgia faithful.
Arizona State 19, Utah 16
How is Arizona State 7-1? The Sun Devils entered 2014 with one of the greenest defensive units in the country, saw their starting quarterback go down and got blasted by a UCLA team that has been underwhelming in almost every other game.
Now, Arizona State is in control of the Pac-12 South and is a legitimate playoff contender. Win out against Notre Dame, Arizona and Oregon in the conference title game, and Todd Graham’s bunch will be in the top four.
This has been a great coaching job by Graham, and Sparky could be a legitimate threat to the Ducks. At the end of the year, we may look back on that UCLA fiasco as one of the most incomprehensible results of the year.
Temple 20, East Carolina 10
Apparently, East Carolina did not want that Group of 5 bowl spot. The Pirates turned the ball over five times against Temple, which scored an upset despite not playing all that well itself.
Actually, that’s too kind. The Owls managed just 135 total yards and won anyway.
Coupled with UCF’s loss to UConn, the reputation of the American took quite a hit on Saturday. There’s a five-way tie at the top, and none of those teams has a signature win. The bottom of the conference contains some of the worst teams in the country.
This is not the season that the American needed to prove itself as the best of the Group of 5.
