Mike Stoops and LSU
"Um, were you going to tell me about this?"
Dean Blevins of Oklahoma City's News 9 has a report out tonight indicating that LSU is pursuing Oklahoma defensive coordinator Mike Stoops to take over the same position in Baton Rouge.
Given OU's collapse in 2014, plenty of Sooner fans would gladly help Mike pack if LSU head coach Les Miles does want to hire him. (I'm not among them.) As such, the timing of the report strikes me as convenient.
Blevins' story relies on unnamed sources and wishy-washy language noting that Mike "is expected" to receive an offer from LSU after interviewing for the gig. Note that there's no specific mention of anyone on the LSU side of the story verifying the details of Blevins' report. Not surprisingly, FootballScoop.com has a different take on the situation, which is that Mike is one of a handful of candidates for the position.
Seeing as Mike's brother Bob has no choice but to make staff changes this offseason, I'd bet the purpose of this leak is to take some heat off of the head coach for keeping his brother on staff: "See, Mike is in demand from big time programs." Miles may indeed have designs on hiring Mike away from OU, but this gives me the impression that the Sooners' defensive coordinator is highly likely to be back on the sidelines in Norman next fall.
